The Dorper is indigenous
to South Africa and has been developed over the last 50 years to produce
the maximum quantity of fast growing lambs by crossbreeding the British
Dorset Horn and the Tailed Black Head Persian.
It
has a high productive rate and a long breeding season which is not seasonally
limited. Lambing intervals can be as short as eight months. In good seasonal
conditions the Dorper ewe can lamb three times in two years.
